“ Night Garden” by Kevin Olson Transitioning from years of creating business strategies and design projects I became fascinated with the process known as silk screening. I wanted to translate my paintings using this media, the big question was “how can I capture the hand work and brush strokes from canvas paintings” into this age-old media form; without losing that look! Meeting regularly with the director of Fine Art Printing at the University of Minnesota, I started to look at methods that would retain the depth and look made by my brush. Multiple layers of color is the answer. Each layer is hand painting onto clear acetate and from this a silk screen is made. There are five layers of color to these simple representations of each botanical. Three separate screens of varying shades of white, and two different shades of black come together the old-fashioned way; “without the use of a computer”. Having lived in Mexico for four years, I chose to name the pieces in Spanish for the day of the week on which the final layer of color was applied. Hence Lunas for Monday, Martes for Tuesday, Miercoles for Wednesday, etc. etc. I call this series “ Night Garden” after my affinity for the darkest time of the day. This is when the flora world looks ethereal and more one dimensional.
