Pair 1840’s Important Coin Silver Open Master Salts, Paw Feet, Robert Rait NY, 11 Troy Oz, Antique American This pair of important American coin silver master salts was made by Robert Rait of New York. These museum-quality, footed salts have cauldron forms, with scalloped lower panels finished with gadrooned edges. Gold Washed Interiors. Each salt is about 2 ¼” high by 3” in diameter. The pair is in very fine, nearly excellent condition. There are no visible breaks, dents or cracks. The gold wash interior retains much of its luster, a bit more so on one. Each salt has three "legs" and each leg has an acanthus supporting the bowl with a paw foot at the base. Each is stamped " R. Rait". The pair has a total weight of approximately 343 grams or 11+ troy ounces. ~*~*~**~*~*~ Robert Rait of Edinburgh (1835-1867) emigrated from Scotland in 1833, where he had been registered as an apprentice silversmith since age 11. He was a silversmith, jeweler, and retailer on Broadway in New York City, as Robert Rait & Co. (1835-1855) and continued to work as a silversmith until 1866. He became naturalized in 1850 and was listed in the 1860 New York census as a merchant with an estimated worth of $50,000—a very sizable sum. Rait pieces are displayed in the Winterthur Museum. The Morris County Historical Society and the Library collection also features a coin silver pitcher made by Rait. Note: We may or may not partially clean or polish any silver we offer for sale.
